Notes from curious diners

Answers for the Tasting Table

A few useful distinctions before you follow the catch, study the plate or choose a seat.

What do you mean by a seafood tasting gallery?

We use the phrase as an editorial lens: seafood dining considered through provenance, visual composition and the setting. It is not a regulated restaurant category. A venue does not need a particular design or service format to be considered through this lens.

Can I book a restaurant through this site?

No. We are an independent journal, not a restaurant or booking service. Contact the venue directly for reservations and current arrangements, including menus, prices, deposits and cancellation terms.

Does beautiful plating indicate sustainable seafood?

No. Visual quality and environmental performance are separate. Ask about species, origin, production method and relevant evidence. Our provenance feature explains how these pieces fit together.

Is local seafood always the better environmental choice?

Not necessarily. Stock condition, fishing or farming method, habitat effects and handling all matter. Distance alone is not a complete assessment. A local landing port may also be different from the actual capture area.

What is the difference between MSC and ASC?

MSC operates standards for wild-capture fisheries and supply-chain traceability. ASC addresses responsible aquaculture. Check the scope of any particular claim: a certification does not automatically apply to every dish served by a venue.

Can a photograph establish freshness or safety?

No. Photography cannot establish handling history, microbiological safety or the full condition of a product. Lighting and styling can also alter appearance. A compelling image should invite curiosity, not replace reliable information.

What should I say about a seafood allergy?

State the specific allergy before booking and again on arrival. Ask about ingredients, shared equipment and cross-contact. Follow your clinician's advice. If the venue cannot provide the assurance you need, do not assume that removing a visible ingredient makes the dish suitable.

Is raw seafood suitable for everyone?

No. Raw and lightly cooked seafood carry risks. People in higher-risk groups should consult current official guidance and seek personal medical advice where appropriate. See our raw preparation notes for links to authoritative information.

How can I photograph a plate considerately?

Check the venue's policy, avoid flash and other guests, and keep it brief so the food can be eaten at its intended temperature. Ask before taking close photographs of staff. The meal is an experience, not merely a subject.
